World Day Against Child Labour 2025

The theme of this year's World Day Against Child Labour is "Progress is clear, but there's more to do: let’s speed up efforts!"

The 2025 World Day will mark the release of the 2025 global estimates and trends of child labour. This ILO and UNICEF joint report will provide a comprehensive overview of where we stand in our global commitments to eliminate child labour.

During the 113th session of the International Labour Conference a high-level event will be held to celebrate the World Day. The event will begin with opening remarks on the key findings of the new global estimates and trends on child labour by the ILO Director-General and a video message from the Executive Director of UNICEF, followed by contributions from governments, representatives of employers’ and workers’ organizations and the Chair of Alliance 8.7 on how to accelerate progress.

Webinar: New UNICEF/ILO global and regional estimates on child labour

On 11 June, UNICEF and ILO will launch a new joint publication presenting the 2024 global and regional estimates on child labour.  Join this webinar to hear from experts and explore what the latest data means for efforts to end child labour and protect children's rights around the world.

This webinar will highlight the key findings from the report, including:

  • Global and regional trends in child labour over time
  • How the profile of children in child labour is evolving
  • Sectors and regions where child labour is most concentrated
  • The consequences of child labour on children's education and well-being

Event: Addressing child labour in agrifood systems through digitalization and due diligence

FAO will host an online event to mark the World Day Against Child Labour, focusing on practical and innovative solutions to eliminate child labour in supply chains and agrifood systems.

Opened by Mr. Andreas von Brandt, H.E. Permanent Representative of Germany to the UN Organizations in Rome, the discussion will bring together Mr. Benjamin Smith, Senior Child Labour Specialist (ILO); Mrs. Sue Longley, Former General Secretary (IUF); Mrs. Ariane Genthon, Programme Officer on Child Labour in Agriculture (FAO);  Mr. Stephen Peedell, Head of Sector Environment/Agriculture (EU Delegation to Cameroon) and will be closed by Mr. Máximo Torero, Chief Economist (FAO).

The discussion will explore how due diligence frameworks and new technologies may improve the sustainability of global agrifood value chains — such as cocoa, coffee, and fisheries — to benefit small-scale producers and protect children’s rights

ILO/ITC Online course: International Labour Standards (ILS) and the Protection of Vulnerable Workers in the Agriculture and Construction Sectors

This online course, offered by the International Training Center (ITC) of the ILO, draws on International Labour Standards (ILS) to equip participants with the knowledge and practical tools to analyze the working conditions in the agriculture and construction sectors. It focuses on identifying and addressing decent work deficits in these sectors, including poor working conditions, lack of social protection, and weak enforcement. The course aims to prevent labour exploitation and unlawful recruitment by fostering stronger cooperation among national enforcement authorities, social partners, and NGOs. Through this collaborative approach, participants will explore concrete strategies to improve compliance, protect workers’ rights, and promote decent work for all.

Gabon becomes new Pathfinder Country

We are pleased to welcome Gabon as a new Alliance 8.7 Pathfinder Country! This strengthens Gabon’s commitment to advancing the fight against child labour, forced labour, human trafficking and modern slavery.
 
Mr. Thanguy Nzue Obame, of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Dialogue led the presentation of Gabon’s roadmap at the 20th Global Coordination Group Meeting of Alliance 8.7, underscoring the nation’s leadership in driving impactful action toward achieving SDG Target 8.7.

Save the date: Alliance 8.7 Action Group on Supply Chains’ Workshop Series

Beginning in June 2025, Alliance 8.7 Action Group on Supply Chains’ member-led workshops will be held on a monthly basis. Meeting links will be shared via email by the Alliance Secretariat.

The first online workshop on addressing child labour and forced labour risks in agriculture supply chains utilizing digital tools for due diligence is organised by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Responsible Sourcing Network (RSN), and Verité.

Strategy Launch: Global March Against Child Labour (2025–2030)

On 10 April 2025, the Global March Against Child Labour (GMACL) officially launched its five-year strategy (2025–2030), to intensify efforts, mobilise key stakeholders, and drive sustainable change. The event brought together representatives from civil society, trade unions, and policy institutions across South America, South Asia, Anglophone Africa, and Europe, reaffirming a shared commitment to accelerate progress toward a child labour-free world.
